Intraseasonal Variability of the Zonal-Mean Extratropical Tropopause Height

چکیده
The physical processes that drive the fluctuations of the extratropical tropopause height are examined with the National Centers for Environmental Prediction–National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP–NCAR) reanalysis data. A composite zonal-mean heat budget analysis for the Northern Hemisphere winter shows that fluctuations in the extratropical tropopause height result not only from a warming of the troposphere but also from an even stronger cooling of the lower stratosphere. While the tropospheric warming is caused by a poleward eddy heat transport associated with baroclinic eddies, the stratospheric cooling is driven primarily by planetary-scale waves. The results from analyses of synopticand planetary-scale eddy kinetic energy and Eliassen–Palm fluxes are consistent with the planetary waves first gaining their energy within the troposphere, and then propagating vertically into the stratosphere. For the Southern Hemisphere, while lower-stratospheric temperature anomalies still play an important role for the fluctuations in the tropopause height, the temperature anomalies are accounted for primarily by a poleward eddy heat transport associated with synoptic-scale eddies, and by diabatic heating. These results indicate that, although the height of the extratropical tropopause is modulated by baroclinic eddies, which is consistent with existing theories, the amount of the modulation is highly influenced by stratospheric processes.

Annular Modes in the Extratropical Circulation. Part I: Month-to-Month Variability*
The leading modes of variability of the extratropical circulation in both hemispheres are characterized by deep, zonally symmetric or ‘‘annular’’ structures, with geopotential height perturbations of opposing signs in the polar cap region and in the surrounding zonal ring centered near 458 latitude. The structure and dynamics of the Southern Hemisphere (SH) annular mode have been extensively do...
متن کاملEddy–Zonal Flow Interactions and the Persistence of the Zonal Index
An idealized atmospheric general circulation model is used to investigate the factors controlling the time scale of intraseasonal (10–100 day) variability of the extratropical atmosphere. Persistence on these time scales is found in patterns of variability that characterize meridional vacillations of the extratropical jet. Depending on the degree of asymmetry in the model forcing, patterns take...
متن کاملOn the Zonal Structure of the North Atlantic Oscillation and Annular Modes
The zonal structure and dynamics of the dipolar patterns of intraseasonal variability in the extratropical atmosphere—namely, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the so-called annular modes of variability—are investigated in an idealized general circulation model. Particular attention is focused on the relationships linking the zonal structure of the stationary waves, synoptic variability ...
متن کاملA global blended tropopause based on ERA data. Part I: Climatology
A new tropopause definition, based on a flow-dependent blending of the traditional thermal tropopause with one based on potential vorticity, has been developed. The benefits of such a blending algorithm are most apparent in regions with synoptic scale fluctuations between tropical and extratropical airmasses. The properties of the local airmass determine the relative contributions to the locati...

The zonal mean relative humidity response to a doubling of CO2 in a climate model is examined using a global climate model and an offline tracer transport model. Offline tracer transport model simulations are driven by the output from two configurations of the climate model, one with 1979 concentrations of atmospheric greenhouse gases and one with doubled CO2. A set of last saturation tracers i...
